The Grange Pavilion in Grange Gardens has been officially opened, to start a 12 month project between local residents and Cardiff University’s Community Gateway programme.
The aim is to develop the facility as a community space for pop-up events and other uses. Community worker Ali Abdi will be based there on Mondays and the Gateway project officer on Fridays.
A kitchen was donated by Ikea and the inside of the building has now been refurbished. There is a hope a community cafe could be opened.
Councillor Lynda Thorne, who cut the ribbon, said it had been sad when the bowls club and green closed but the building had been going to “rack and ruin” and she was delighted to see the work that had gone into bringing it back into use.
She said it had a new lease of life and it was now up to the community to come up with ways of using the building.
There are hopes it might be transferred to community ownership in the next 12 months.
